The beginnings of the church date back to the 14th century; however, it was not mentioned until 1623. A new church was built on the site of the old building in the second half of the 17th century and further renovated in the first half of the 18th century. Around 1700, its arches were painted in a true fresco technique. Valvazor also mentions 'the church of John the Baptist in Sestranska vas with three altars and the fraternity of St. Anton of Padua'. The bell tower has a varied two-storey lantern roof with volutes and decorative vases in the late Baroque style from the 19th century and is a specialty on a Slovenian scale.
