What does sustainable tourism represent?
According to the definition written by the UNWTO and UNEP in 2005, it is defined as follows: 'Sustainable tourism refers to all current and future economic, socio-cultural and environmental aspects of development. To ensure long-term sustainable development, an appropriate balance needs to be struck between the environmental impacts of tourism, tourism employees, local communities, and tourism providers.
Sustainable tourism is based on four pillars of development:
- sustainable management: ensuring the competitiveness of tourist destinations and companies so that they can develop successfully and bring benefits in the long run;
- local community & economy: improve the quality of life in local communities;
- culture: strengthen and respect cultural and historical heritage, diversity of destinations and traditions;
- environment: reduce air, water, and soil pollution, reduce waste, strengthen the quality and characteristics of the landscape, and protect and preserve nature, plants and animals.
We will list just a few benefits of sustainable management. These are:
- financial savings for companies and destinations whose costs are reduced due to efficient energy use and the use of renewable energy sources;
- greater attractiveness for investors;
- the guest has a better experience;
- less staff turnover
- gaining in visibility and reputation.
